Philanthropinum – Wikipedia, Johann Bernhard Basedow (September 11, 1724, – July 25, 1790) was a German educational reformer, teacher and writer. He founded the Philanthropinum, a short-lived but influential progressive school in Dessau, and was the author of Elementarwerk , a popular illustrated textbook for children.


Philanthropinum, late 18th-century school (1774–93) founded in Dessau, Germany, by the educator Johann Bernhard Basedow to implement the educational ideas of Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Aiming to foster in its students a humanitarian worldview and awareness of the community of interest among all people, it taught rich and poor boys together regardless of religious or class distinctions.


On Dezember 27th, 1774, Johann Bernhard Basedow solemnly inaugurated a «School of Philanthropy» or Philanthropinum, as he called it himself in the letter he wrote from Leipzig (1774) promoting the experiment: « … the Philanthropinum established in Dessau, a school of philanthropy and good grounding for students and young teachers …».


In 1774 he opened a model school at Dessau, the Philanthropinum . As the name signifies, it was to be a school of philanthropy for teachers and pupils. In contrast to the severe discipline of earlier days, children were to be trained in a friendly and gentle manner, instruction was to be made attractive, study as easy and pleasant as possible.

He established an experimental school called a Philanthropinum, in Dessau, which lasted from 1774 to 1793. Kant referred to Rousseau’s influence on him. He dealt specifically with pedagogy only within a lecture he gave as holder of the chair of philosophy in Königsberg the main features of the lecture were collected in a short work, Über Pädagogik (1803 “On Pedagogy”).
